Sizing and markers are an unusual phase. I was not raised or trained in the garment industry. I'm a photography and marketing kind of chick, so I am learning most of this as I go. Once the bikinis are made then I can hit the ground running with all of my breath-taking skills and knowledge, but until then, I am a fish out of water feeling very unintelligent on a daily basis. My whole initial reason for starting this company was to offer bikinis that fit and are sized differently than the average. The trouble with this is that sizing is standardized. Doing non-standard sizing opens up all sorts of space for confusion. Confusion between me and my pattern maker, my pattern maker and the grader, me and the grader, and then me and my pattern maker again. (A grader is the person who sizes your styles. All the samples are done in a medium and then sized up L and XL and then down S and XS). My Pattern maker is Joanie Waian in Dana Point- She is amazing and I could not have done any of this without her. She has answered a slew of stupid questions with a smile on her face and has been so patient with me. Appreciative does not even begin to describe what I feel. I wish I had counted how many times she asked me if I was sure I wanted to size my tops this way. The sizing is why I want to do this. Brands who 'fit everyone' essentially fit no one. Jeans are not all made the same, different lengths, heights, room for booty. Every brand has a body type and every woman has HER BRAND. Why should bikinis be any different? I'm not looking to fit everyone half-assed, I'm looking to fit a specific type like a glove. That feeling when you've been trying on clothes all day and nothing is fitting... But then, you find that perfect piece that feels like it was custom made just for you. I want to be that perfect piece.
We had several conversations trying to un-confuse the total confusion and then a hick-up with the markers due to the confusion, but we are on track now and I am taking the markers to my cutting contractor in 2 days to get the next phase started!
